MACHINERY REPAIRS
WHILE YOU HAVE TIME
Have you ever dreamed that you went
through spring planting and fall harvest
without any major breakdowns of your
machinery? It's a sweet dream, isn't it?
But maybe there is a way for you to
minimize your down time and save
money at the same time.
During the next few months, when
repair shops are not all that busy, is a
good time to have your machines
checked and repaired. Many shops are
willing to give a discount for work done
in the winter months, because it is
r
important for them to keep their trained
mechanics so they will be on hand for
the spring and summer rush.
Certainly the mechanic or welder can
do a better job of repairing your
machinery when he is not under the
pressure of too many jobs and long
hours. More than one mechanic has
admitted that during the seasonal rush
they cannot always do as good a job as
they would like as there are always too
many jobs waiting. When a mechanic
can take the time to examine all parts

of your machinery and report any
problem areas to you, then you are the
winner. Specialists in large machine
shops are familiar with each make and
model and know the weak spots where
trouble is most likely to occur. They
can test your motors and equipment by
analyzing your oil, which will tell them
which parts are wearing, how much
they are worn and how much life is left
in your engine.
Some farmers are of the opinion that
it costs more to have machinery re-
paired in the off-season because the
mechanics might take more time to do
a job, thus raising the labour costs.
One solution to this possibility would
be to ask the repair shop if they can
charge a flat rate for certain repairs or
ask for an estimate before the work is
started.
There is a savings when work is done
by a mechanic or welder who is being
paid a straight hourly rate rather than
an overtime rate, which can occur
during busier times. Another advantage
is that you can have the repairs done by
appointment, at your convenience.
Wouldn't it save wear and tear on you
(and your wife) if you didn't have to
rush your machinery into the repair
shop during spring planting and then
worry about the time you will lose if the
