The Rural Voice, 1983-01, Page 28FARM NEWS WHYTE BROTHERS AWARDED CONSERVATION AWARD The Norman Alexander Conservation Award was presented to Nick Whyte (top photo, on right) for the Whyte brothers R.R. 2 Seaforth, by Norman Alexander, at the Huron County Soil and Crop Improve- ment Association annual meeting at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre in Brussels. The Whyte brothers, Nick and Bill, practise conservation tillage using a soil saver on one third of their corn crop and have established grassed waterways. Some of these water- ways work in tandem with a stone dike built about five feet high and ten feet long constructed from stones and part of an old barn foundation. Some rolling areas and lowlands were reforested with white pine in co-operation with the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Whytes also reclaimed two or three acres of a gravel pit for cultivation. A resolution was presented on the pro- blem of permissible levels of vomitoxin in soft winter wheat and wheat products, calling for an international standard ap- plied in fairness to all segments of the wheat and milling industry in all coun- tries. In Canada, .3 parts per million is allowed while the U.S. allows 2 parts per million. The resolution also stated research be conducted to determine just what is the safe level of vomitoxin.
