STABILIZATION BELOW
COST OF PRODUCTION?
Today for the umpteenth time, I heard a
market analyst repeat the dismal facts of
farm failures and bankruptcies with the in-
evitable adjunct that most were in the red
meat sector. The forecast for next year
was in the same vein — lower profitability
except for commodities under supply
management.
Are we red meat producers incapable of
comprehending the economic facts of
life? Can any kind of business survive in
these times if it produces without regard
for what the market will absorb?
The latest solution offered meat pro-
ducers is the loudly acclaimed stabiliza-
tion plan — a government subsidy. The
idea that governments, as financially
strapped as ours, will subsidize anyone
beyond the welfare level is clearly
ridiculous. We may get stabilization
alright — stabilization below the cost of
production — a reversion to the cheap
food policy of years ago.
Supply and demand determine the price
of meat. Producers have limited influence
on demand, but we can certainly deter-
mine supply. Until the Pork Board and the
Cattlemen's Association grasp that basic
fact and develop marketing strategies ac-
cordingly and until we stop blaming
everyone else for our predicament and
take the necessary action to remedy the
situation, the red meat industry will re-
main in its present state.

WINE STORY WELL DONE
May I congratulate your writer, Rhea
Hamilton, for the feature on Ontario
grapes and wines carried in the December
publication of THE RURAL VOICE?
She had done her research well and pro-
jected a positive understanding of the
status of our wine growing industry. On-
tario's wineries are now processing some
10 million gallons of wine a year and two
thirds of the grapes they purchase from
Ontario's growers are the high calibre
varieties grown especiaily for table wines.
More than seven million vinifera and
hybrid vinifera vines are now in production
in Ontario and this illustrates the
remarkable investment by growers in con-
version or expansion plantings. Wine
judges and writers in Canada and in other
countries enjoy Ontario wines - I enjoyed
Rhea Hamilton's article.
Yours truly,
