The Rural Voice, 1982-12, Page 56Grey County Federation of Agriculture Newsletter The Grey County Federation of Agriculture held their annual meeting, banquet and elections at the Flesherton Community Hall. The head table included from left: Don Hill, 1st vice-president; Mary Harvie, secretary -treasurer for Grey and Bruce counties; Bessie Saunders, president and Michael Burke, 2nd vice-president. Annual Meeting Highlights Grey County's Annual, Banquet & Dance was held in Flesherton Community Hall with a good attendance. "Deals on Meals" did an excellent job of catering and Paul McMullens Orchestra kept everyone on their feet to round out a pleasant evening. Head table guests were Merle and Sheila Gunby, Bob and Mary McKessock, Don and Mary Harvie, Don and Ruth Hill and Marshall and Bessie Saunders. Representatives from Huron, Simcoe and Wellington Federations of Agriculture were present. The 3 regional directors were introduced, Bill Pullen, Clay Schwegler and Arnold Oliver, as were the township presidents. In her report, president Bessie Saunders mentioned that women were not taking an active part in the Federation. As well as the directors per diems and mileage , there is also the presidents expenses, the vice presidents' expenses and the office expenses which should be shared by every township federation. The Saturday mail delivery is a problem we are working on. If we have to submit to 5 day delivery, we would prefer Saturday delivery and skip Monday. Holidays usually fall on Monday therefore the Saturday paper would be delivered on Tuesday. The Sun Times is delivered to post offices that are open on Saturday but some post masters refuse to give them to the subscriber because they are not delivered in alphabetical order. One small post office gets 80 Sun Times papers bundled in rural routes. The hydro corridor is going through Grey County. When we know what districts are involved we will set up a committee to help the property owner get a fair settlement. We urge everyone to use caution when dealing with hydro. Hopefully, property owners will stick together to get equitable treatment. Merle Gunby, OFA executive member, brought congratula- tions to the new OFA directors and thanked Ruth Hamill and Murray Clarke for their dedication as past OFA directors. Merle advised that OFA was supporting the Agri Bond idea rather than indexed borrowing. OFA is looking into the concerns of eastern farmers re wheat prices should the Crow Rate structure be changed. OFA is trying to pressure Frank Miller into pushing through the proposed Property Taxation program which is not popular in this county. Barry Tolton, agriculture representative for OMAF announced the Farm and Home Management Day on Jan. 5, part of the Grey Bruce Farmers week, at the Hanover Coliseum.
