How close are you to the poverty line?
You can still survive on less in the
country than you can in the city, but the
"official" poverty line for both places has
risen during the last two years because of
inflation.
A family of four is poor, according to
the federal government's national council
of welfare, if it is surviving in a rural
region with an annual income of $13,419
or less. The same rural family was
considered on or below the poverty line
with an annual income of $10,699 or less
in 1980.
If this family of four was to move to a
Targe metropolitan city it would now need
an annual income of $18,243 or more to
stay above the poverty line, or $17,337 if
it moved to a medium-sized city (popula-
tion under 500,000 but more than
100,000).
A single person living in a rural area
now must bring in $6,633 a year to stay
above the poverty line, compared to
$5,289 two years ago. The comparable
figures for a large metropolitan city and
medium-sized city are now $8,970 and
$8,519 respectively.
The poverty line for a rural couple is
now $8,669. It was $6,912 in 1980.

August. Poor or low-income Canadians
are roughly defined by the council as
those who spend nearly 60 percent of their
money on the essentials of life; food,
clothing and shelter.
