Dr. Charles Baldwin
wins Society award
The Soil Conservation Society of
America meeting in Louisiana presented
23 of its members with Commendation
Awards for 1982. Of the 23, one is a
Canadian, Dr. C.S. Baldwin of R.C.A.T.
Society president, Robert C. Baum of
Salem, Oregon, made the award presenta-
tions at a banquet concluding the So-
ciety's 37th annual meeting.
The Commendation Award is given to
Society members for professional achieve-
ments and for service to the Society at the
state or regional level.
Recipients of the Commendation
Award include: Charles S. Baldwin, head
of Soils Section, Ridgetown College of
Agricultural Technology, Ridgetown,
Ontario, for his practical research into
suitable crops to control erosion along
ditch banks, for his active involvement in
conservation demonstration projects, for
the technical direction he provided for the
film production, "Land -- Our Last
Resource," and for his active role in the
Ontario Chapter of SCSA.
FLASH!!
Cliff Robb, Farm Editor at CKNX will
be retiring this fall. A strong rumour has
come to The Rural Voice from a very
reliable source that Cliff's replacement
will be none other than Murray Gaunt.
Certainly, Murray's high profile in gov-
ernment circles and his extensive back-
ground in agriculture will add an interes-
ting element to farm broadcasting circles.

4-H Council
The second meeting of the Bruce
County 4-H Council was held in August
at the OMAF office. The meeting opened
with the 4-H pledge, followed by roll call.
The minutes of the last two meetings were
read, because at the last meeting only five
members were present. We had a vote on
whether to continue the 4-H council or
not. The result of this vote was yes. We
then held elections for our new executive -
President - Paul Patchell; Vice -President -
Steve Horner; Secretary -Treasurer - Kelly
Fitzgerald; and Press -Reporter - Debbie
Oatman. A sheet was passed around and
everyone had to sign up for a committee
(sports, social or public relations).
The next meeting is September 9th at
8:15 P.M. at the OMAF boardroom. All
4-H'ers are more than welcome to attend
our meetings. Debbie Oatman,
Press Reporter.

Farm game demands
luck, risk and guts
Prairie grain farmers will be able to
while away this winter's hours playing
games with their lives.
Several hundred test copies of The
Graingrowing Game, developed by Win-
nipeg businessman Morris Dorosh, are
being manufactured with the goal of
having it commercially available by
Christmas. The game is based on the
hazards and problems of western Cana-
dian farming.
The object is to survive, even perhaps
make a little money by overcoming
obstacles like crop failures and high
interest rates. Political and regulatory
conditions on the Prairies also come into
play.
Four players can use boards represen-
ting 390 -hectare farms divided into three
fields to raise any combination of the four
major wester crops; wheat, barley, rape-
seed and flax. Durosh says the game is so
detailed and based on such true -life
conditions that it probably has little
application anywhere else, so distribution
is to be restricted to the Prairie provinces
and aimed at people with farm back-
grounds.
