Over the past several months, the
Ministry of Natural Resources have been
holding "open house" days to inform and
receive comment from the public on draft
planning strategy proposals.
In April of this year, the Southern
Ontario Co-ordinated Program Strategy
was published; from this master docu-
ment, land use strategies were prepared
for the various regions in Southern
Ontario. In the Wingham district, for
example, the target yield for the next 20
years is 116,000 cubic meters of forest
products per year, 400,000 kg. of com-
mercial fish per year and 36,000 animals
pelts per year. Targets for aggregates have
not yet been developed. Targets are also
being established for recreational uses
such as hunting, fishing, camping etc.
When asked what mechanisms the
ministry expected to use to achieve these
targets, Warren Knight, land technician
for the Ministry said, "In northern
Ontario it is relatively simple, as much of
the land is crown owned. In southern
Ontario we will be relying to a great extent

gains from lottery
The provincial Lottery Research
Awards Program has awarded $189,984
to agriculture -related research projects,
Ontario Agriculture and Food Minister
Dennis Timbrell said in a recent an-
nouncement.
The University of Guelph will receive
$87,100 to study the following topics:
investigation of the role of ureaplasma in
bovine genital tract disease, development
of oats with milling quality as a cash crop
for Ontario, egg quality, salmonella in
Ontario cheddar cheese, and adaptation
of early maturing corn hybrids in Nor-
thern Ontario.
United Breeders of Guelph will receive
$20,000 to study artificial insemination in
sheep on a commercial basis. Pinecrest
Foods of Guelph will receive $19,614 for
studies on the production of roaster -type
chickens.
The Processing Strawberry Action
Committee of Waterford will receive
$63,270 toward studying the development
of a processing strawberry industry.
