The Rural Voice, 1982-09, Page 52Vuce Ce 7ede'tato#e oa /4 Plan to attend Bruce Annual The Semi -Annual Banquet and Dance for the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture was held at the Hanover Columbus Hall on Saturday, July 31. Bruce Taylor, Chairman of the OFA Property Taxation and Assessment Committee was guest speaker. Mr. Taylor gave an informative speech on the present taxation of farm lands and the effect the proposed changes would have. Following a short business section, music was provided by Impressions and a social time was enjoyed by all. Update of Bruce County Events The membership of Bruce County 1SM's presently stands at 1293. Last year at this time we had a membership of 1306. A concentrated effort for additional memberships was held on Aug. 15th to 17th in the county of Bruce. This year there have been 122 cancellations and non -renewals and 85 new members signed up. These 85 members took 41 man days to accomplish. Bruce County's plans for Farmer Appreciation week are well under way. A tour of the county will take place on Sept. 4th and 5th with four farms slated for a tour on Saturday. At the present time, billeting is required for couples or families coming from Nomination for Bruce County Federation of Agriculture Farmer of the Year Award Every year, the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture presents an award to a person who has made a valuable contribution to agriculture. Sunday, Sept. 5th will be spent on individual farms until 1:30 P.M. when they will leave from Walkerton to return to Toronto. If any farmer is willing to extend their hospitality to these tourers, please notify Gisele Ireland, 392-6461 and make the arrangements. It is an ideal way for these urban people to see the farm family in action on a very personal basis. Farmer of the Year Award This year will be the third year for the Bruce County Farmer of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual in the county who has made an outstanding contribution to agriculture and the rural environment. To be eligible for this award, the individual must be a member of the Federation of Agriculture and be nominated with accomplishments listed by individuals or organizations in the county. There have been many events and groups active in the county of Bruce this year that have done much for the rural environment from a financial and social awareness view. Results of 4-H Judging Competition On Friday, August 6th, Bruce and Grey counties held their annual 4-H Judging Competition at the Hanover Fair grounds. Nearly 200 4-H' ers participated representing both counties. Each contestant judged nine classes comprises of livestock and field crops giving reasons on four of the above classes. In addition each member completed a seed and plant identification quiz. The Bruce County winners were as follows: (Possible Score - 700) First Prize - High Aggregate - Wrist Watch - Donated by Bruce County Junior Farmers - with a score of 634 points - Darren Holm High Novice Judge - C.N.E.
