Drugs needed for swine
Drugs. hormones and vaccines are necessary for the
prevention, management and treatment of disease in swine
practice.
One drug of importance to the farmer is oxytocin - a
hormone that can aid in milk let down. farrowing or
cleaning. It is not a drug that should be used as a means to
calm and quiet your sows prior to farrowing. Oxytocin
should only be used after a sow has farrowed at least one
pig. The reason is that the hormone will cause uterine
contractions therefore the cervix must be dilated by prior
passage of a new born pig.
Lindane is commonly used to treat sows with mange. It is
important to note that feeders or sows should not be
sprayed within thirty days of market to meet withdrawal
requirements.
Another drug commonly used is Penicillin - Streptomycin
antibiotic. With resistance developing to certain drugs
there are fewer situations where streptomycin is of use.
Pure penicillin has the same effect in many cases. The
advantage here being that Penicillin alone has a five day
withdrawal period whereas Penicillin in combination with
Streptomycin has a thirty day period of withdrawal.
For treating baby pig scours there are many drugs
available on the market. To decide which drug to use can be
a problem unless a simple procedure is followed. A rectal
swab is easily cultured to give indications as to which may
be the most effective in treating the causative organism in
each case of diarrhea. The swab should be taken prior to any
drug adniinistration.
One problem observed on the farm is that drugs are often
administered with dirty needles and syringes. This can be
the common cause of abscess formation at the injection
sites. To prevent this store the needles in a jar containing
alcohol and clean the syringe with warm water after each
use. To prevent contamination in the bottle containing the
drug a clean needle should be used to withdraw the drug
into the syringe. Another needle should be used for the
injection. Drugs should not be used if outdated. The expiry
date is written on the drug label. Also storage of most drugs
should be under refrigerated conditions.
