The Rural Voice, 1982-07, Page 22Status of chemicals changed Agriculture Minister Eugene Whelan announced changes in status for 21 pesticide chemicals. All the chemicals were placed under suspicion because of suspect safety studies carried out by a private, U.S.-based testing firm. In- dustrial Bio -Test Laboratories Inc. Health and Welfare already announced four categories into which suspect chemicals have been placed -- cleared of suspicion; a requirement for special warning labels; status quo; and use expansion on a case-by-case basis. The latest recommendations from Health and Welfare Canada clear eight registered chemicals involved with the 1BT studies. They are chlorothalonil. daminozide, methiocarb, simazine. clorthal-dimethyl, mefluidide, prometon and fenitrothion. An earlier requirement for special labelling also has been lifted on four other chemicals -- alachlor, coumaphos. metribuzin and tetrachlorvinphos. These chemicals have been moved to status quo category permitting continued re - HOME FARM NEWS gistration pending further review. Two chemicals are new on the IBT list -- resmethrin and methyl iso -thiocyanate -- and have been added to the status quo category. Four other chemicals have moved from the status quo category to the category requiring special labelling. These chemicals are propham. methidathion. cyanurates and dinoseb. In addition. three chemicals have been transferred from the status quo category to the category with use expansion on a case-by-case basis. They are crotoxyphos. fensulfothion and propargite. Jerseys, fifth highest The Dalevilla Jersey herd owned by Lloyd and Betty Dale of R.R.#2, Seaforth has attained the fifth highest production in Canada in 1981. During the year 31 cows in the Dalevilla herd averaged 4775 kgs. of milk. 260 kgs. of butterfat, an average butterfat test of 5.45% for BCA's of (162-164) a composite of 326. The Dalevilla herd has consistently been one of Canada's top-ranking Jersey herds. For 1981 they were tied with the Holmhurst herd owned by Hugh MacDon- ald. Lennoxville. Quebec and the Bridon herd owned by Brian and Donna Sayles of Paris, Ontario. Sheep stablization Ontario sheep producers who sold Iambs for slaughter in 1981 will be eligible for a Federal Stabilization Payment of $5.14 per Iamb. Producers must provide evidence of sale for slaughter. Application forms are being sent directly from Ottawa to sheep producers.
