Making changes
to an older farm house
Renovations to the home of Ralph and
Deanne Dixon were about the last item on
the priority list to improve their farm. The
barn was first in line. Then they had stone
piles to bury and wet land to drain. After
that, improvements in the house began with
the most necessary changes. Plans pro-
ceeded as time and funds permitted. Have a
look at the Dixon home and see the changes
the couple made in an older farm house.
In 1976 aluminium siding was put on the
house. The old porch was replaced with a
slightly wider family room. The olid wood
shed at the back of the house became the
garage with a gable roof to blend with the
existing house. Field stone on the family
room was collected locally, some from the
farm. The Dixon s removed all of the old
shingle siding.
Bottom right, the wooden beams and
mantle for the fireplace were cut from the
Dixon's bush. Flagstone was placed in
front as a safety feature.
