MEETING MINUTES
Over 200 people turned out to attend the Feb. monthly meeting
of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture. Minutes of the
last month's meeting were passed as printed in the Rural Voice on a
motion by Clete Dalton, seconded by Bob Coleman. Carried.
OFA Director, Merle Gunby explained briefly the Emergency
Aid Program available for farmers. If you are interested you may
talk to your banker or your OMAF rep. for more information.
President Gerry Fortune introduced the guest speaker, Dr.
Donald Chant, President and Chairman of the Ontario Waste
Management Corporation. Dr. Chant is a graduate of the
University of British Columbia with a degree of Honours in
Zoology as well as having Ph. D. from the University of London,
England. Dr. Chant spoke on different aspects of how a "Liquid
Waste Disposal" site would affect the environment, the land and
the citizens around it. He stated that "Ashfield Township" was
not on a list for "proposed sites". After a lengthy discussion and
talk, Dr. Chant answered some lively questions from the
audience. He introduced four members of his Ontario Commit -tee
who accompanied him. Michael Scott of the committee, the
Communications Director answered questions on finalizing
details of the program. Girvin Reed, of the Ashfield Concerned
Farmers Group thanked Dr. Chant. Mr. Reed then introduced the
7 members of his committee, Raymond Hogan, Bob Farrish, Fred
Philips, Tom Helm, Brad Gilbert and Max Riegling.
Ken McWhinney, of the 4-H Club Leaders group explained how
their group is thinking of dropping the 11 year olds faun their
organization, as there doesn't seem to be enough to interest them.
At present the age is 12-19 years. Mr. McWhinney said they are
changing their Achievement Days to some time other than winter
break because a lot of people are away at that time. They will now
be sometime between March 1 and April 1...each area to set up
their own dates.
HYDRO TRANSMISSION LINES
Tony McQuail reported; The Hearing Board ruled against the
request for funding. They also requested that the Ministry of

Agriculture and Food participate in the hearings. HCFA is going
to attempt to try to have 1 member from our organization present
at the hearings each day. OMAF will also be participating. We
represent farmers directly. OMAF represents the government.
FARM CREDIT
Motion by John Van Beers that Huron County Federation of
Agriculture support Mr. Whelan in the concept of retiring farmers
being able to invest their money in Farm Credit Agribond which
could then be lent out to other farmers, seconded by Bob
Coleman. Carried.
