The Rural Voice, 1982-03, Page 37• Grey County Federation of Agriculture Newsletter Doug Gowanlock is new fieldman On January 21st a new fieldman was chosen by the Bruce and Grey Area Office Committee. Doug Gowanlock of Port Elgin gtarted his new job on January 25 and after a few weeks of training will be ready for action. Artemesia Federation of Agriculture held their annual meeting and banquet at noon on Jan. 21 at the El Ronn Inn. Guest speaker was Ralph Barrie president of the OFA. Also speaking was Carl Spencer president of the Grey -Bruce Survival group. Barry Tolton ag. rep. from OMAF Markdale conducted the election of officers, Clay Schwegler is the new president. Hear Ralph Barrie On the evening of Jan. 21 Osprey Federation of Agriculture held their annual meeting and banquet at Feversham. Guest speaker was Ralph Barrie. Oscar Tyson, regional director for East Grey and Bessie Saunders president of Grey Federation attended both meetings. Barry Tolton conducted the election of officers. Ralph Barrie mentioned the fact that we had to listen to each others' speeches twice. On January 22. Ralph Barrie attended kitchen meetings in Egremont. Glenelg and Euphrasia townships which were well attended and the people had a chance to talk to Ralph about their problems. A result of these kitchen meetings was a telegram to Premier Davis protesting the inadequacies of the Ontario Farm Adjustment Assistance Program. Grey County Cattlemen's Association held their meeting in Stothart Hall. They supported the concept of the supply management report presented by the Ontario Cattlemen's Committee. A resolution was passed in support of increasing the check -off for advertising. They support the Grey County Plowmen in their bid for the 1987 match. The Cattlemen's Bonspiel is March 10 in Rocklyn Arena. The president is Sam Lemon. 1st vice John Verdonk. 2nd vice - Brian McKee. Bruce Ward was appointed as secretary -treasurer, John Verdonk is the Provincial Director with the alternate Les Davidson or Harold Klages. The bonspiel sponsored by the Grey Federation will be Feb. 20 at Markdale with two 10 end games and prizes for everyone. F or A sponsors speaking contest The Public Speaking contest sponsored by Grey Federation of Agriculture has been planned. The semi finals are: North East Grey March 3 - 8 p.m. at Beaver Valley School, North West Grey, March 4 - 7:30 p.m. at Derby Central School. South-West Grey March 5 - 8 p.m. at James A. Magee School. Hanover and South East Grey March 4 - 8 p.m. at Osprey Central. The finals are at Durham Community School March 11 at 8 p.m. Membership drives in progress The membership committee of Grey Federation of Agriculture met at the home of the chairman Ken McIntyre and planned membership drives as follows - February 22 - 26 Artemesia, Osprey and Collingwood townships. March 1 - 5 Holland and Derby townships. March 8 -12 Glenelg and Egremont. March 15 - 19 Normanby and Bentinck townships, March 22 - 26 St. Vincent and Euphrasia townships. Help will be needed from the directors to make these drives successful. The Insurance Committee met with representatives of the Co-operators to review the insurance currently on the office equipment and the directors. The committee will meet again prior to the February directors' meeting. The Grant Sweiger committee had their first meeting, members are Harvey Switzer from Grey County Council, Barry Tolton from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and Ray Robertson from Grey Federation of Agriculture. Pork producers meet The Grey County Pork Producers Annual meeting was Feb. 4 - Ken Leitch is the chairman. John Black - Vice Chairman of UCO was guest speaker. Dr. Gordon Bowman of the University of Guelph is chairman of the Ontario Marketing Board Committee which was set up to look into marketing alternatives. Others members are Ron Urquhart, Carl Moore, George McLaughlin, Eric Alderson, Stu Lane and Bob Forshaw. Pork Producers were sent a summary of the study. A slide presentation was given at the meeting then a lengthy question and answer period followed. A meeting will be held March 1 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Walkerton for hog producers in Bruce, Grey and part of Huron County. The committee will be there to explain the study. Bus trip to farm show Artemesia Federation of Agriculture sponsored a bus to the Farm Show in Toronto. Several other townships were represented on the bus as well. Allan Hill, Middlesex County, a member of the OFA membership Committee was the speaker at the January Directors' meeting giving tips and pointers to being a good membership salesperson. A member came to the meeting for heir with snowplowing problems and broken fences. Meet the members dinner set The meet the members dinner is at Keady Community Centre on March 20 at 12 noon. The nominees for the Tommy Cooper Award will be present and the award will be made at this time. Ticket price is $8.00 each, available from your township director or the office at Hanover. Grey Federation of Agriculture has been represented at the Plowing Match Meetings and the president will be at the Plowmens Convention to support the Grey County Group.
