Plan Grant Sweiger award
The September meeting was held in the OMAF board room at
Markdale with a good attendance.
The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is requesting financial
assistance for the Emergency Task Force. A raffle will be held to
help with the expense, the draw being made at the annual meeting
on Oct. 23. Local newspapers and Chambers of Commerce are to
be contacted representing a brief at the Task Force hearing in
Hanover on Oct. 21. Grey Federation is presenting a brief. The
executive will meet at the home of Bessie Saunders to draft the
brief.
The Grey Bruce Farmers week committee met recently. A
decision was made to amalgamate Federation Day and Home Day.
The new title will be "Farm and Home Management Day.
Hopefully the weather will co-operate this year.
The Grant Sweiger award is being set up. Recipients will be one
Junior Farmer Member and one 4-H member each year for a
period of twenty years.
The directors agreed to continue with Rural Voice for one more
year. Most feel that it was an excellent farm paper.
The executive will contribute door prizes for the annual
meeting, the draws being made during the banquet.
Ruth Hamill gave the report of the September OFA meeting in
Toronto. Ron White had a meeting with the Minister of Finance,
Allan MacEachen and Ralph Barrie had been at Queens Park
re interest rates. A design for a small ethanol plant can be secured
from Richard Thomas. Box 58, Kearney. Ont. The minister of
Agriculture Eugene Whelan promised stabilization of $8.96 per
hog for April 1980 to March 1981.
OFA urged everyone to write Prime Minister Trudeau re the
interest rates. A demonstration to Queens Park will be held in the
near future.

The Regional Elections for South West and South East Grey
were held at Watra Resort on Sept. 22. A good crowd was on hand
to see Bill Pullen elected as Regional Director tor South East Grey
and Murray Clarke for South West Grey Jack Hale, general
manager of OFA conducted the elections. Bill Crawford, field man
for Huron County, Bob Leslie, field man for Grey and Bruce
Counties and Mary MacDonald assisted. The guest speaker was
Jerry Krauter of OMAF. His topic was "Duties and
Responsibilities of directors in voluntary organizations."
Grey north and Grey East combined their regional meetings at
Holland Chatsworth School on Sept. 24. The guest speaker. Mr.
Les Weirmier, a chartered accountant, spoke on "Should you
incorporate your farm", and also answered many questions. The
regional director elected for north Grey was Ruth Hamill of
Holland township and Oscar Tyson of Osprey Township is the East
Grey Director.
Grey Federation joined Huron, Bruce and Wellington Counties
in sending out a letter to each ISM asking for their signature to a
letter drafted to Rt. Hon. Pierre Trudeau , demanding immediate
action from the government to save what is left of the agriculture
community.
Perhaps some people in Grey County who are experiencing
financial difficulties don't realize that their MPs and MPPs are
willing to do everything possible to help. The MPP for Grey
County is Bob McKessock R.R.#5, Chatsworth and his riding
office is at 17 Toronto St., South, Markdale telephone 986-3102.
Dr. Gus Mitges, Owen Sound is the MP for part of Grey County.

Dr. Gary Gurbin of Paisley is the MP for part of Grey and Bruce
County. His constituency office is at 134 Confederation Building.

The next directors meeting will be on Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. at the
OMAF board room Markdale when committee will be chosen for
the coming year.
