Regional meetings planned
The August board meeting brought forth discussion regarding
annual, regional and county meetings at which time ISM s will
have the opportunity and responsibility to elect their directors and
executive for the coming year.
Regional meetings are scheduled tentatively for October 20 in
Teeswater and October 21 in Tara, 8:30 p.m. The County Annual
will follow later in December. At a time when OFA is greatly
concerned about the farm economy, rising interest rates, an
agricultural protection and development act, hydro corridors, and
the threat of diminishing property rights of rural land owners, it is
imperative that every farmer make an effort to attend these
meetings, elect the best possible people to the positions and voice
your support for OFA's actions. Poorly attended meetings can
only reflect farmer apathy to what seem like crisis conditions
facing many farm families.
If you stay home, you have only yourself to blame for ineffective
farm policies.
Task force will look for solutions
OFA is concerned about the slow response of government to the
economic crisis on our farms. Therefore, OFA is forming an
independent Task Force to find solutions to farmers' problems
and report its finding to the OFA annual convention in November.
Hearings will be held across Ontario and farm groups, marketing
boards and individuals will be invited to speak at these hearings.
OFA will continue to lobby for subsidized interest rates to all
farmers, an expanded Small Business Development Bond, and
increased funding at lower rates for the Farm Credit Corporation.
Other areas of concern for which OFA is corresponding with
government are: Bi117, which would amend the Human Rights
Code for Ontario. The proposed amendments would make an
employer responsible for the employees' actions and words.
Therefore, if your employee slandered or assaulted someone, you
niay be held liable as their employer. Try to imagine the
implications of this bill.
--Amendments to the Expropriations Act, to revise upward the
existing rate of 6% paid by government to landowners for
unsettled claims. Mr. McMurty has agreed the rate is unrealistic
and his department is considering changes.
