Membership canvasses
needed in the fall
Grey county Federation of Agriculture met at the OMAF board
room, Markdale for the regular meeting on Aug. 26.
Mary MacDonald presented the financial statement. The
Finance Committee is to meet before the Annual Meeting.
Dr. Gary Gurbin'M.P. had received many inquiries about the
Small Business Development Bank,and had sent out informatior
he received from the Department of Revenue.
The president, Bessie Saunders received an invitation at attend
when OFA presents its annual brief to the Ontario cabinet on
October 28.
Bob Leslie reported on memberships and requested a
membership meeting soon to set up canvasses for fall and winter.
Ruth Hamill gave the report of the August OFA meeting. OFA
is forming an Independent Task Force to find solutions to farmers'
financial problems. it will be made up of prominent farm leaders
as well as consumer and bank representations.
OFA is now paying o'tt Extended Health claims up to December
31. 1980. Any claims after that will be paid by the co-operators.
East and North Grev Regions will hold a joint Regional Meeting

John Giese
South -Grey Regional Director
John Giese was born in Nechlinbourg. Germany in
1930. On August 25. John was severely burnt while at
work. He died on August 30 in Toronto General Hospital.
A memorial service was held in Dromore Church on
September 2.
John lived with his grandparents on a farm in
Germany. His mot her and five sisters were killed during
the war. and his father died in a concentration camp. He
attended agriculture college before coming to Canada in
1951. He worked near Hamilton /or some time. then
went to British Columbia where he met and married
Evelyn Radford in 1955. John was a contestant to swim
the Juan da Fuca Strait. but was defeated by the cold
water. He and Evelyn moved to Ontario, eventually
settling in Egremont Township. where theirfarm is still
located.
He was secretary. then president of Egremont
Federation and at the time of his death was South Grey
Regional Director and a member of the OFA
Environmental Committee. He was a director of the
Grev County Cattlemen's Association. and a member of
the Grey County Pork Producers. the Durham
Agricultural Society, the Durham Horticultural Society
and a former candidate /or the NDP party.
Donations to the Durham Agriculture Society would
be appreciated by the Giese family.
at Holland Chatsworth School to choose one regional director and
three delegates to the Annual Convention. South and South West
Grey will hold their meeting at Watra Resort. Dates were not
definite for either meeting. The township presidents in each
region will be the nominating committee.
The 4 executive members will be the nominating committee for
Grey's Annual Meeting on October 23 at Durham Legion. The
"Ovations" will play for dancing after the banquet and annual
meeting.
Rocklyn agricultural society are planning for their 114th Fall
Fair on Sept. 25 and 26. Featured at the fair will be the Rocklyn 4H
Calf Club Show and the Regional Calf Club Show. A dairy goat
show is gaining in popularity with three classes for commercial,
Registered Nubian and Registered Saanen. A variety concert will
open the fair on Friday night Sept. 25 followed by dancing to "The
Georgian Bay Ramblers."
The Grey County Womens institute held their Rally at Annan
on August 18. 135 women attended.Mrs. H. Maluskie of Chesley
is the chairlady for the coming year. The guest speaker was Miss
Mona Winberg of Toronto, a director of the Cerebral Palsy
association.
The next meeting of Grey Federation will be Sept. 23 at the
OMAF board room. Markdale at 8 p.m.
