Natural Farmers
Continued from p. 21
grain and hay purchasing oil cake, shorts,
bran and molasses to mix for a top
dressing. They grow no corn as Norman
doesn't like spring plowing his heavy clay
soils.
Their fertility program starts with the
manure from the cows. This is piled all
winter and then spread on a hay field or
sometimes on grain stubble. This land is
then fall plowed and spring seeded to
mixed grain underseeded with red or
sweet clover. The clover is plowed in the
next summer when in full bloom. The land
is them summer fallowed and fall plowed.
Mixed grain underseeded with an alfalfa,
brome and timothy mixture is planted the
next spring. The field remains in hay until
the rotation is repeated.
Hay is cut, dried and chopped into a
wagon with a forage harvester. The dry
hay is blown into the barn. This allows
Norman to harvest and mow his hay as a
one man operation. He estimates that his
yield is around four tons per acre .
Norman saves and cleans much of his
own farm seed. This spring he planted
rodney oats and herta barley which trace
back to mixed grain bought in 1956. His
yields range from /0 to 90 bushel per acre.
The seed is cleaned by a "common sense"
cleaner manufactured in Alliston.
