If anyone is questioning the value of
rotating their crops, this picture of two
corn roots should dispel any doubts. The
root on the left was taken from a field
where the previous crop had been alfalfa
for two years. Pr for to that, corn had been
grown for thirteen years.
The root on the right came from a field
where corn has been grown continuously

for fifteen years. Although the picture
doesn't show it, you could see the root
worm damage quite clearly on this root.
According to John and George
Underwood, well known Wingham area
corn producers, changing the field to an
alfalfa crop for two years has broken the
disease and weed cycle and the root
worms have been starved out.
Check manure
storage capacity
Farmers should check now to make sure
they have enough manure storage capa-
city for the upcoming winter, says Jim
Weeden, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food extension engineer.
Fall is the best time to expand manure
storage facilities because the ground is
dry for construction and the farmer knows
if he had a spill problem last spring.
The Agricultural Code of Practice
recommends a minimum of six months
storage, but Mr. Weeden says 200 days is
more acceptable for many parts of
Ontario, and eight months is even better.
An early fall combined with a late spring
or equipment breakdown can make a
six-month storage capacity inadequate, he
says. You have to think about emergen-
cies.
Last spring, the Ontario Ministry of the
Environment investigated three spills in
Wellington County alone, he says. Farm-
