"Rural women have choices, responsibilities and opportunities"
More than 100 women attended the one day conference for women livinR in rural areas, sponsored by Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology and Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology. Laura Sabia, past chairman of the Ontario Status
of Women Council was the keynote speaker. She told the women "we need to re -discover ourselves, value ourselves and our
knowledge and realize we have an immensity of talent. " She criticized the times when a women had to hide her brains for fear of
hurting a man's ego. "The women's liberation movement has given women three things," she said. "choices, responsibilities and
opportunities. It is up to women to take advantage of them. "
Dianne Harkin, top right, co-founder of W. S.A. [Women for the Survival of Agriculture], told the rural women there are three kinds
of people in the world: people who make things happen, people who watch things happen and people who wonder what happened.
She said: "If women work shoulder -to -shoulder with men on the farm, why don't they work shoulder to shoulder with men off the
farm?" Harkin told the audience she feels vocational guidance in high schools is inadequate. She also said negative messages about
being a girl start in the home, and parents should strive to teach independent thinking to their children.
