Grey gains fourth region
The big news in Grey County - we have our fourth region. The
deadline for memberships was July 22 but since the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture wouldn't count all the memberships
that we took in, we were given one more week.
Thanks to John Giese insisting on delivering the memberships
in person, we made it. Thanks also to all of the directors who left
their own work to help get the memberships. If OFA accepts our
recommendations, Bentinck and Normandy will be one region and
Glenelg, Egremont, and Proton the other. East and north regions
will remain the same.
Each region must have its elections for OFA director and
delegates to the annual OFA convention by October 31. The
annual meeting of Grey federation will be October 23 at the
Durham Legion.
The Grey County Cattlemen's Association had a very successful
barbecue and dance in Durham on July 30. Four hundred and fifty
people enjoyed good Ontario -grown beef and dancing to Touch of
Gold.
Bruce Saunders reported on the Hydro route study. Five groups
are meeting and then will give their recommendations to a review
board which will decide whether to accept or not. The route
through Grey County could be ten miles wide. The first meeting
was in Flesherton and the second at the Richview Control Centre
behind the Skyline Hotel in Toronto. The delegates were given a
tour of the control centre, followed by a business meeting.
Artemesia Township Federation of Agriculture is sponsoring a
ploughing match at Grey -Owen Lodge in Markdale on Saturday,
September 5, at 10 a.m. It is open to Glenelg and Euphrasia
participants also. There will be a queen of the furrow contest and
they are looking for at least six girls, age sixteen to twenty-six,
with some knowledge of agriculture. If you would like to enter, or
know of someone who does, please contact Doug Sinclair, at
924-2725. There is good prize money for the ploughmen. Class Six
is open to anyone from Grey County. A ploughman's ball at
Flesherton Community Centre will wind up the event. For tickets,
contact Doug Sinclair, Wes White or Jack Patterson. Also at the
ploughing match there will be exhibits, both antique and new, and
the Canadian Charolais Breeders will have an exhibit.
The promotion committee of the Grey County Pork Producers

29 to October 3. They are taking out liability insurance for the
booth. Bruce Woodhouse and Donald Jack are to contact suppliers
for the meat and for a freezer and a refrigerator. Two area women
will be in charge of cooking pork burgers, ham on a bun, and the
ploughman's specialty. Apples, milk, and coffee will also be for
sale. The committee was to have met again on August 17 to
finalize plans.
A Grey Bruce barrow show will be held at the Dundalk fall fair.
Also at the Dundalk fair, the Grey County Pork Producers will
donate a trophy for the highest scoring carcass in the carcass
competition.
At Markdale fall fair, on August 29, at 1 p.m., a calf show will be
featured. It's open to any 4-H boy or girl in Grey and Bruce
Counties. This is the fifth year for this show and they hope to have
one hundred topnotch calves. Doug Sinclair is in charge of this
show.
Next meeting of Grey federation will be August 26 at 8 p.m. at
the OMAF boardroom in Markdale.
