Grey needs 53 more members
The regular meeting of Grey County Federation of Agriculture
was held in the OMAF board room at Markdale on April 22 with
a good attendance. The minutes and the treasurers report were
dealt with. The correspondence included a letter from the Grey
County Cattlemen's Association outlining changes they would
like to see in the Meet the Members Meeting. They also
agreed to become an associate member of the Federation. Mr.
Clay Schwegler will be the delegate.
From Dale Ferns, director of OFA's properties committee re
Grey County Resolution - Pits and Quarries - stating changes
which could be considered for the Official Plan. He said that the
present Government will likely re -introduce the Aggregates Bill
this spring. The OFA has monitored the proposed legislation and
has offered comments to the Resource Development Committee.
The OFA's Properties Committee has developed a standard
farm building contract for use by Federation members. It is to be
used as a guideline to make owners aware what to look for in a
contract. Copies of the contract will be in the county office.
The Finance Committee chairman. Robert Taylor, reported on
the meeting on April 2 to discuss having more townships on the
levy system, thus making it easier to draw up a budget. The
committee also discussed a fee for affiliated groups.
The Public Relations Committee is still waiting for information
on the candidates for the Media Award.
Resolution Committee chairman Robert Taylor had one
resolution re the Expropriation Act.
Bob Leslie said that to achieve a 5% increase Grey needs 53
new members. Canvasses were set up for Egremont and
Artemesia. He suggested having the MP and MPP addresses in
the Rural Voice as many people don't know where to find it.
Don Hill reported for the Grant Sweiger Award Committee.
They felt that the award should go to 4-H or Junior Farmer
members. The award would not be for further education but for a
worthy member of either group.
President Bessie Saunders and Ray Robertson met with Mrs.
Sweiger and her family to get their approval of the award.
Ruth Hamill gave the OFA report. Considerable time was
spent on the interest rate assistance program. A meeting will be
held on June 4 at the Constellation Hotel, Toronto at 12:30 noon.
Hopefully a large group of farmers will be present to press for
help for the farming industry.
One of Grey County's resolutions was treated as a joke.
Obviously none of the directors or their families has
Emphysema. It is no joke to have smoke puffed into your face
when you have trouble breathing. John Giese reported on the
Agriculture Protection Act.
Mr. Nicholas Newteboom had asked for help at the Meet the
Members dinner. Mr. Bob McKessock M.P.P. was able to help
by contacting the planning board. Mr. Newteboom felt that the
Mining and Resources Ministries had too much power.
Bessie Saunders reported on the Meet the Members meeting
which was an improvement over the former wine and cheese
meetings. Present were M.P.s Dr. Gus Mitges, Dr. Gary Gurbin
and Mrs. Gurbin. M.P.P Bob McKessock and Mrs. McKessock,
Grey County Warden Maurice Brown and Mrs. Brown, and
Euphrasia Township Reeve Marshall Saunders. Many questions
from the floor were capably handled.
The next regular meeting will be June 24 at 8 p.m. at the
OMAF board room Markdale.
