the eyes of children
Don't know about you but for many of us who work at Rural
Voice this is our favourite issue of the year. It's the time when we
get slowed right down and for awhile at least. see the world of
agriculture through kids' eyes.
This year's annual contest focusses on the family farm and
once again it's brought out some terrific contributions from
young readers in poetry. stories and art work.
To the winners. congratulations and you'll be receiving
cheques in the mail before the end of June. To all who entered
[and we've been surrounded and almost buried. by art and other
evidence of creativity in our office here for more than a month)
thank you: your effort has been appreciated: please enter again
next year.
As well as pages from our young readers. Rural Voice this
month has an opinion piece by writer Adrian Vos on the survival
of the family farm. To balance that weighty topic, Gisele
Ireland's back as usual with a column specially tailored to our
kids' issue.
We've also got a story by Elaine Townshend that'll be of
interest to farmers concerned about how well agriculture
communicates with consumers. She's profiled some area farm
families who open their homes for farm vacations. You've
thought about offering vacations for city dwellers? Read the
story starting on page 13.
In closing. here's a quote from one of our favourite entries in
Rural Voice's kids' contest: "Life on the farm is wonderful jot
learning agriculture.- That's from David Elliott of R.R. 3.
Lucknow, Holyrood.
See you in July.
