meeting planned
The Bruce County Federation of Agriculture met at the OMAF
boardroom in Walkerton on February 25. 1981. There were in
attendance: Borden Fenton, Harold Poechman, Don Ahrens,
R.J. Cobean, Brian Ireland, Evan Keith, Ian Clarke, Walter
Weppler, Harold Schlorff. Les Ribey, John MacAuley, Ken
Robinson. Arnold Misch. Albert Simpson, Jim Powers, Glenn
Sawyer. Raymond Fischer. Grant Wallace and Ron Gutcher.
Harold Poechman, 1st Vice President, chaired the meeting.
Harold introduced to the directors Grant Wallace from OFA in
Toronto and Les Ribey. the new Jr. Farmers representative to. the
Bruce County Federation of agriculture.
Minutes: Moved by Ray Fischer that the minutes be adopted as
distributed. Seconded by Glenn Sawyer. Carried.
Borden Fenton read the minutes from the February 13. 1981
meeting. Corrections have to be made.
Financial Statement: The secretary passed out a bank
reconciliation statement and a financial statement. The County
has $6.818.32 in their bank account. From October 1st, 1980 to
February 23. 1981 inclusive the receipts were $8.547.70 and the
expenses were $12.244.56.
Moved Jim Powers. sccondcd by Evan Keith that they sell
all their Co-operators shares except $500 worth and put the rest
in the Elmwood Credit Union for 1 year terms.
Correspondence: Harold read a letter from L.A.M.B. concerning
a seminar which is going to take place on March 5. 1981. at 9:30
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Canadiana Room, Legion Hall in
Hanover. Qualified personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture
and Food Worksmen's Compensation Board and the Canada
Employment Centre. will be on hand to conduct various
workshops. share information and answer your questions.
There was a letter from Lorne Henderson, Minister of
Agriculture and Food. about foreign ownership.
Rural Volice is asking for an increase of .75c/member/year.
Moved by Ken Robinson. seconded by Arnold Misch that they
continue on with Rural Voice.
Eugene Whelan. Minister of Agriculture. sent a letter about
Canfarm's settlement with the federal government.
Keith Matthie. Chairman of Membership Committee. sent a
letter stating that Wayne Robertson was this area's re-
presentative.
Extended Health Plan: Jim Powers stated that the Co-operators
are just taking care of the OFA members that are involved in the
plan.
Grant Wallace also stated that all claims before Feb. 9/81. If
you receive a N.S.F. cheque send it back to Co-op Health
Services. The Co-operators plan will have 3 limits: $500/yr.
drug. $1.000/yr. nursing. $5,000/yr,/family overall. All
participants will be getting a letter in the mail. You will be able
to join the plan within 3 months of your membership. People who
pay direct are not covered by the Co-operators.
Insurance Committee: Albert Simpson stated that people that
go on canvasses with members are not covered by the
Co-operators insurance. Moved by Albert Simpson. seconded by
lan Clarke that they be covered under the same policy.

Moved by Albert Simpson, seconded by lan Clarke that they
add 10 members for a Membership Committee. Carried.
Meetings Committee: John MacAuley said that they have
planned a candidates' meeting on March 5. 1981 at the Chesley
Community Centre. There is also going to be a "Meet the
Members" meeting on April 3rd at the New Seasons Rcstaurant
in Kincardine. The secretary will notify each director about the
details.
Moved by Albert Simpson. seconded by Brian Ireland that
they charge $7.00 a couple with the social hour included and the
federation pick up the rest of the expenses.
There will be complimentary tickets for commodity boards and
the press.
Jr. Farmers Les Ribey said that he will come to the meetings and
take back any vital information concerning the Jr. Farmers.
Borden Fenton stated that the federation would like to start up a
Young Farmers Committee.
Hydro Committee: Glenn Sawyer had the directors' support
about getting more information out of Hydro so farmers know
what is going on. They feel that Hydro is not including farmers in
their planning. Glenn will write to Rural Voice concerning this
matter.
Membership Don Ahrens read Bob Leslie's report because Bob
was at the Grey County Director's Mecting. Bruce County has
recruited 92 members since Oct. 1/80, which brings the total
ISM's to 1310. Don stated that Bob wanted an inventory of
farmers in each township and urges committees to get OFA
committee's minutes.
Farm Labour Pool: Brian Ireland stated that there will be a
seminar March 5, 1981 on employee and employer relationships.
Bonspiel: Moved by Ray Fischer. seconded by Don Ahrens
that they give Eldon MacKinnon the money he needs to get the
bonspiel on its way. Carried.
OFA Report: John MacAuley reported that Jim McGuigan of
Liberal party, Lorne Henderson of Conservative party and
Michael Cassidy of the NDP were there canvassing for the
election on March 19.
Gravel Pits: Ron Gutscher has 40 acres on his farm which is a
gravel pit. He has been informed that he must have a commerical
license to use the gravel for his own needs. Ron feels that he
should not have to have this license and wants the federation's
support.
Moved by Brian Ireland, seconded by R.J. Cobean that they
have an information meeting in Ripley or Walkerton concerning
the problem of having to have a commercial license to take out
your own gravel for your own use.
Correspondence: Moved by Brian Ireland, seconded by Ken
Robinson that they start a file for all correspondence that the
president receives and keep it in the office.
