COMMENT
Beat the blahs
with Rural Voice
As we get this March issue of Rural Voice to press it's a wet,
dank and dreary February day. If the weather's similar when this
magazine appears in your mail box, our story on farmers who are
depressed [page 13] is probably the first thing you'll turn to.
There aren't many solutions in the story, but it's an
acknowledgement of a growing problem. and by a banker who's
seen lots oJ' cases where high interest rates. and other things
beyond their control are getting farmers down. But before you
give into the depression that only the weather and the economy
combined can produce. we suggest you turn to the hilarious
Gisele Ireland column on page 29.
Feeling better? If Gisele on romance won't cheer you up,
nothing will.
In a more serious note Rural Voice this month looks at some
unusual beef operations in Western Ontario. We talk to a couple
of area farm families who specialize in the cow -calf end of the
beef cycle and learn of the cross -breeding successes they're
having.
Then in Perth County we have a story on dairy beef the
by-product of Perth's thriving dairy industry that doesn't get
much publicity.
We also review the age-old beef marketing board controversy
and you can read about a newer cdtroversy that's stirring up
some Holstein -Friesian producers.
Our Rural Family section this month is about beef too. We
asked area home economists for some economical and unusual
recipes that prove a meal of beef isn't necessarily that standard
roast or hamburger.
Then too, you may find just what you've been looking for in the
free Rural Voice classified ads: our Up and Coming section lists
more farm events than we've seen for months. and our regular
columnists and newsletters are here in full force.
Still need proof things are looking up? A story in our advice
column will help you pick out the right seed catalogue and then
the right varieties to order from it.
Now who says late winter is a lousy time to live in Western
Ontario?
