Huron County bean producers are
going to boycott the premises of W.G.
Thompson and Sons Ltd. until legal
procedures against the company are
brought to court.
The bean producers approved a motion
to boycott the company at their annual
meeting held in Hensall recently. The
motion was forwarded by John Hazlitt
and seconded by Bev Hill. In speaking to
the motion, Hazlitt said he hopes the
boycott will bring the matter before the
courts sooner.
When the 1977 white bean crop was
harvested in Huron County, four dealers
including W.G. Thompson, refused to
complete payment for beans from area
producers.
Since that time, the three other
dealers, Hensall and District Co-op, the
Ontario Bean Growers' Co-op and
Ferguson Brothers of St. Thomas have
completed their discoveries in court.
Gordon Hill. chairman of the Huron
County White Bean Producers, said the
only monies received by producers to
date for their 1977 bean crop was the
initial payment.
Interest `plundered' cattle profits: Gracey
Charles Gracey, secretary -manager
of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association,
told Perth County cattlemen 1980 hasn't
been a good year for beef producers.
Mr. Gracey told the annual meeting
that producers started the year with "too
much optimism."
He said while consumer demand for
beef will likely stay high for the
remainder.of the year, producers can't
expect any improvement in price returns.
He told producers, "The farmer's
Henderson denies interfering with site choice
Agriculture Minister Lorne Henderson
denied recently that he interfered in the
choice of sites for a proposed toxic waste
disposal complex.
Stuart Smith, Liberal Party leader, told
the legislature the consulting firm that
advised the government on the location of
the disposal site considered Lambton
County one of the best possibilities.
Smith said he has heard after a cabinet
meeting it was decided the disposal site
would not go into Lambton County,
Henderson's home riding.
The agriculture minister responded
that Smith was "never more wrong in his
life." He said one-third of the province's
industrial waste is already disposed of at
Tricil Ltd., a site southeast of Sarnia in
Lambton County.
It's now proposed to locate the waste
disposal site in the South Cayuga area.
but Henderson said as a precaution. no
edible crops will be grown around the
site. The site is expected to be about
100 acres in size, with a 640 -acre buffer
zone around it, where only feed cereal
crops would be grown.
share of the consumer dollar declined
considerably," during the past year.
The U.S. grain embargo on Russia also
created problems. according to the
secretary -manager. Mr. Gracey said the
embargo made it more economical for
Canadian farmers to feed more beef
and pork rather than sell their grain.
"Interest rates plundered cattle profits
in 1980." he told the audience, while
unemployment increases reduced the
consumers' capability of buying beef. He
pointed out the drought in Western
Canada also increased the marketing of
beef at depressed prices and is delaying
the growth of the cow herd, thus
extending the beef cycle.
Mr. Gracey said there won't be an
oversupply of beef until 1984, and
encouraged farmers to expand their
herds without fear of overproduction until
that time. But before the prices for beef
can improve. the supply of •pork and
poultry will have to decline.
"The pork surplus has kept the lid on
beef prices," he said.
Following Mr. Gracey's speech,
Graeme Hedley. manager of the Ontario
Cattlemen's Association, outlined pro-
gress in changing the Bank Act.
