How can we change
peoples' opinion of farmers?
1 was reading your article on "Farmer's Image Stereotyped"
by Keith Roulston.
I have been farming full time since 1972 and before that I lived
in the city, so there are no hang ups about the good old days of
farming.
A few years ago 1 was going to borrow money to modernize my
dairy farm. A city couple was at my home and we were
discussing it. They said it was a wonderful idea. Afterwards I
said I was going to get rid of the wood stove, garden etc. They
said I had a funny way of thinking, or, other words, not quite
right upstairs.
1 have also been told by city people that the sole reason for
modern farming, farming large acreages, modern equipment
etc. is "just for consumers to have cheap food." There is no
other reason in the world for farming.
There have been relatives at my farm this year whose income
is in the S40,000.00 a year bracket and in the area where they live
they and their friends and neighbours believe the price of food is
completely out of line and we are taking more than our share of
the Canadian Dollar.
I am asking, how can our image change, how can you change
people's beliefs and ideas. These ideas come from conversation
with people, some of them "ex -farmers."
If this article is printed I would like my name withheld. I hope
this article is not offensive in any way.
