OCTAGONAL BARN IN HURON COUNTY
COMMENT
Have a
good summer!
Although we all like to be lazy in the summer, July isn't a
quiet time on the farm. There seems to be a lot going on away
from home too and many of us make an extra effort to get
together with friends and relatives, go to the theatres we are
lucky to have here in western Ontario and attend carnivals,
centennials and other special events.
So this month, Rural Voice is heavy on photos, on the theory
that if you don't have a whole lot of time to read, you'll at least
take a break long enough to look at our pictures.
Our cover stor y, and photos inside, are of an unusual and
beautiful octagonal barn in the northern part of Huron County.
Sheila Gunby's photos have done a terrific job of pointing out the
barn's interesting features and are proof of the old adage that a
photo's worth a thousand words.
Our other photo story this month salutes those taken for
granted characters, the farm dogs. Various staff people have
been collecting farm dog photos over several months. Some of
them are anonymous, but all are well known in their own
neighbourhoods. Somehow, a lone cat snuck into the collection
too.
We have a salute to hard working dairy farmers in this issue,
with Giselle Ireland's feature on three Bruce dairy operators. As
well we're proud to have a guest column, written especially for
Rural Voice, by OMMB chairman Ken McKinnon.
We'd also like to welcome a new monthly column to these
pages. It's called Pig Tales, and is written by a Seaforth
veterinarian, Dr. Chuck Robbins. While Pig Tales are his
specialty, Dr. Robbins may also talk about other livestock in
future columns. Look for him every month in Rural Voice.
Giselle Ireland is back with another funny column this month.
It's on bean planting time and we imagine every farm wife will
find at least some of it all too familiar.
Next month Rural Voice will feature an issue on the farmer and
his environment.
Happy browsing and a good July to all our readers.
