Huron producers tour swine station A bus load of Huron County pork producers drove to Guelph recently to tour the O.M.A.F. Arkell Research Station at the Univresity of Guelph. The tour was organized by the Huron County Pork Producers Association. The $3.25 million dollar facility is owned by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and is managed under contract by the Dept. of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Guelph. Here research in pig nutrition, management and behaviour will be undertaken; as well the complex provides a unique facility for studying building options which save energy, environmental physiology, reproductive physiology and waste management. The buildings were open for tours from April 14 - 20. After this date, entry has been restricted. The buildings will be p opulated by minimal disease pigs which are delivered by Caesarean section. Eventually 400 boars and gestating sows and 500 growing -finishing pigs will be housed in the facility. The liquid manure from the pigs will be initially stored in holding tanks and then used to irrigate the 700 acres of crop land located next to the research centre. Dr. Roger Hacker, Co -Ordinator of Swine Research, told the group that only six men will be required to operate the research station FOR SALE USED Tires - 16.9" x 28."
