The Rural Voice, 1980-06, Page 38Carolyn's horses have taught her "responsibility. It is my responsibility to make sure that Gaileyna and Tartan get ridden and exercised and to look after them. What I feel my horse has given me, not tan -fit' mei is friendship. If you have ridden, worked and fed a horse for years, it becomes your best friend. You will have hours of fun. My horse has improved my horsemanship and my sportsmanship. You have to be able to come out of the ring smiling and patting your horse if your horse has done well and not placed. I have also learned to be patient, because when you are working with a young horse for weeks, it may seem like you're not getting anywhere, but you must be patient." Her future plans are set-" I have been accepted by a horse trainer to apprentice with him for two years starting this summer." He'll be getting a good apprentice. In the last two years in 4-H, Carolyn has been Senior Champion Showman, Champion County Showman, and Reserve Senior Champion Showman. Lori Cameron, 15, joined 4-H for the first time in 1979. Her horse, Cindy, has been owned by the Cameron s for 51/2 years. Lori says Cindy is "quite stubborn and likes to have her own way. She also loves a lot of attention." "Due to mistakes made by a professional trainer, we decided we would start a re-training program through what 4-H taught me. Voice commands were the first on my list, i.e. walk, trot and lope, etc. By using the lunge line, we tried to teach her to calm down and to obey my commands. I found I was quite successful (with a lot of help) but it took the whole of last summer to accomplish." "By doing the training program, she has taught me to have more patience and also have respect for her. She has taught me by loving and yet being firm, you will get more response from your horse." Cindy is also a born ham -as are most horses. Lori remembers the time "we were getting the horse ready for a show. My mother had a cup of tea in her hand and was also holding Cindy. When I turned to see what was going on, Cindy had her lips in the tea cup trying to drink the tea." Lori feels 4-H has been very helpful. "It helped me with a re-training and re -feeding program for my horse. You get the chance to meet a lot of other people and share their ideas -my parents also learned more about horses being they are welcome to sit in on the meetings." The future for Lori -"My future plans are to keep showing and maybe someday breeding horses." Four talented young women. using patience, love, but firmness in their handling of horses.
