Inside the Rural Voice
Wow! That pretty well describes the reaction of staff here at
Rural Voice as entries poured in for the magazine's second
annual kids' art, poetry and story contest.
Children in Bruce, Huron and Perth responded so well to our
requests for entries that desks in our offices were piled six and
seven inches deep with contributions. They c 'me in bulk from
schools, they came singly in the mail. Sortie even came over the
counter to our Blyth office. ("And when -will they be judged?" a
couple of eager youngsters there wanted to know.)
Judging the entries was a momentous task. And with those
we've printed in this issue we've only scratched the surface. As
it was, we took space away from our refiular features to showcase
more of the kids' work.
We hope you enjoy reading and looking at the cream of the
crop in this issue as much as we enjoyed sorting through and
judging all the entries. We're delighted with the response from
our younger readers and hope you'll take a good look at their
efforts.
The final work should go to one youngster, Gavin McCanagen
of Clinton who won an honourable mention for his story in the 9
to 13 age group. Gavin writes: "This is a true story about how I
got my uncle's lawnmower tractor stuck twice in the same day.
1 was about four years old and learning to ride the lawn mower
tractor.
There is a fruit free in my uncle's back yard and it was a hot
day. Just before dinner I was thirsty so I rode up to the tree in
fourth gear. I was so interested that I hit the tree. I lost my
appetite. I didn't know what to do. First I put the brake on, then I
went to get my uncle. Then I went up stairs to the washroom and
locked the door and stayed there."
