Huron County has a rather unique 4-H
club. It's a money management course
offered to senior members, ages 16 years
and over.
Steve Thompson of R.R. 3, Clinton is the
leader of the group and the originator of
the idea in Huron. He has a masters degree
in business and taught business and farm
management at the University of Guelph
and said he is trying to apply his training to
the 4-H club level.
He said the club is trying to teach some
basic understanding of the management of
money --where it goes, where it comes
from, how it's used. He said sometimes
people from farm credit organizations or an
agricultural officer from one of the
chartered banks speak to the group.
Topics vary from month to month. Mr.
Thompson said that one month they may
be talking on budgeting, another month
about sources of money or farm credit for
the purchase of a farm or another time, it
will be on taxation.
One former 4-H member who took the
club, Oscar Meier, 19, of R.R. 4. Brussels
is now studying agriculture and business
management at Centralia College.
When Oscar was taking the course in
1979, they studied financial management.
bank loans, had speakers in on farm credit
and bank loans and studied how to manage
money. They also did partial budgets.
budgeting in general and anything to do
with financing on the farm.
Oscar said the speakers on the bank
loans, "give you a little know-how of
what's going on in the bank situation for
farmers." He said that in college they were
studying budgeting for record keeping and
how to pass businesses on from father to

son and that the 4-H money management
course had helped a little bit with that.
"It should help make me a little more
aware of things," he said, like financial
needs and how to get loans at banks and
what goes on with farm management.
This 4-H course is held in the summer
months and there are about six or seven
meetings.
