"A
magnificent exercise
in frustration"
Now that the election is over I hope government gets down to
work and gives us some good economic planning and action.
Since I'm writing this some ten days before the election it is still
very much in doubt as to who will be in charge but whoever is in
leadership, I hope there will be an end to playing "games" with
the electorate.
I was over to Londesboro for the three candidate meeting and
while there was some good speaking and some good questions I
was just a bit disgusted that some very important points were not
raised.
"Energy" took up most of the time and some good points on
renewable sources were made.
All Candidates were strong on making Canada self sufficient
and on conserving our energy resources but nobody mentioned
the reported sale of trillions of cubic feet of natural gas to the
United States over the next few years.
One of the candidates explained away the huge increase in our
National "Deficit" (a polite way of saying "debt") by saying the
Conservative Gov. of the early 60's borrowed large amounts to
bolster our sagging economy at that time. Later the Liberal
government did the same thing to an even greater degree in the
early 7.0's and this is the Icason the "deficit" is so large now.
If this borrowing to stimulate the economy was justified, if this
money was wisely used, if our productivity was increased ,why
didn't it increase the National income to pay off the debt?
Unless our new government can overcome this problem we are
on the way to bankruptcy.
Interest rates also received considerable attention. We were
told that over the past couple of years interest rates have jumped
dramatically. This of course is absolutely justified because our
economy is so closely tied to the United States. U.S. rates went
up and Canada had to keep her rates a couple of percentage
points higher.
Why is it then that U.S. rates have dropped P/2% % at least over
the past couple of months but our Canadian rates haven't
dropped accordingly?
Could this be explained by the "media" reports that financial
institutions and Corporations have donated about $1,000,000 to
each of the "old parties" campaign funds? I think "invested"
would be a better word.
If our new government can't overcome these problems this
past election will go down in history as a magnificent exercise in
frustrati
