MP speaks to Bruce F of A annual
The annual meeting of the Bruce County Federation of
Agriculture was held at the Chesley Community Centre on
Friday, December 9th. It proceeded with a banquet with guest
speaker Dr. Garry Gurbin, Progressive Conservative.
Dr. Gurbin touched on several subjects in his speech,
outlining some of the legislation to come and some that had been
passed. The interest rate was a topic of concern to all thoseā¢
present and Dr. Gurbin told the meeting that as unpopular as it
was it was necessary to curb futher spending and take some
time to bring the dollar to a more stable level. It didn't make
anyone there feel any better about it but it is a fact. We were
urged to buy Canadian and decreaseour national deficit.
The fact that Canada has sold a considerable quantity of
natural gas to the U.S.A. should help our economy considerably.
Canadians have a supply of natural gas that will last 400 years at
the present rate of use, and that is with sources that are
presently tapped with no further explorations.
The oil price increase also came under scrutiny. Dr. Gurbin
explained that the increase is inevitable with rising world prices
and the need for Canadian dollars to further support exploration
and sources of replacement in the future.
Dr. Gurbin seems to have considerable sympathy for the
farmer and small business people in our community and I hope
that this sympathy carries itself to ways of alleviating or making
some of these problems more bearable for the farmer and small
businesses here. The meeting had great confidence in his ability.
The executive of the Bruce County Federation of Agriculture
was elected. This past year they consisted of President .. . Eldon
MacKinnon. 1st Vice President . . . Harold Poechman, 2nd Vice
President . . . Don Ahrens.
The new executive elected are: President . . . Borden Fenton,
1st. Vice President . . . . Harold Poechman, 2nd Vice President
. . . Gisele Ireland.
Attend Pork Producers annual meetings director urges
As the months of January and February are upon us, it is now
time to remind pork producers in the counties of Bruce, Grey,
Huron, Perth, Waterloo and Wellington or the north area, that at
this year's annual meetings of the Pork Producer's Associations
elections will be held for councilmen.
The councilman is entrusted with the job of promoting pork in
his own area and with educating his fellow producers. He should
attend the meetings of his county association in order to help
develop ideas for the marketing board in a continuous effort to
have the highest possible prices and the lowest possible
marketing cost.
All this may sound very serious, but most of the present
councilmen have a lot of fun putting on barbecues or mall
displays in co-operation with other commodities.
Every election year there are councilmen who, for various
reasons, are not able to stand for re-election. It is in the interest
of every pork producer in the north area to have the best possible
representation on their county board... Why not stand for
election or at least persuade a neighbour or friend to stand if he
is interested? It is never good to wait till the actual meeting to
nominate someone. In such cases, the best one gets is a
reluctant representative.
Watch the weekly newspapers for the dates of the various
annual meetings and, please, bring your favourite councilman
with you. Nomination forms are available from most of the
present councilmen and from the OMAF offices. So if you have
found a suitable candidate, get a form and have him sign it if he
can't be at the meeting that day.
