For summer
reading
This month Village Squire begins an
occasional series that we hope will give
readers as much pleasure as it has us.
Entitled "Our Towns" the series will look
at unusual, and ordinary, towns and
villages in Western Ontaro and attempt
to get their pulse. Who lives there? Why?
What's extraordinary and what's
mundane about the place?
Writer Dean Robinson kicked off the
series with a visit to Ripley, and believe it
or not, he found a tremendous vitality and
lots of interest in an old place with a
pretty sound future.
Watch for more of "Our Towns" and
don't be afraid to recommend places for
us to write about in future issues.
In our continuing effort to tell you
about what's best in Western Ontario,
we've got a survey of area ice cream
parlours by Elaine Townshend and a
nostalgic and informative look at a few of
the area's best beaches by Susan White.
The history minded will enjoy our story
about steam buffs and an unusual
catalogue business.
Those interested in a local -woman -
makes -good story will like Village
Squire's visit with Carol Cowing who's
started Peaches and Cream in Goderich.
We've got a day trip to Southampton and
Bruce County's fine museum and for
readers whose favourite summer re-
creation is to cull up in a hammock we
present a fine short story by writer Cecilia
Pieterse Kennedy.
All this and columns, a new place to eat
in Bayfield and a Last Word on the way
we were in London.
Now you see why we consider this our
summer reading issue?
