The Village Squire, 1981-06, Page 22so Tiv and Oli are all set to entertain the
younger audience members (Tivoli, get
it!) Oli, by the way, is an Aylmer area
native -a pig born on a local farm,
trained to do several impersonations
including that of the Lone Ranger's
wonder horse, Silver.
Circus Tivoli will be making its first
local appearance in London on October 6,
opening with. what else, an "Aylmer
night."
Period or public gallery
The St. Marys' District Museum,
which is featured in the Village Squire's
1981 Visitors' Guide, is going to have to
change its style or run the risk of losing
the province of Ontario's financial sup-
port. The Museum held a public meeting
in May to get public opinion on the issue.
The Ministry of Culture and Recreation
has established guidelines which state
that museums must become either period
places or public galleries. The first
alternative would mean restoring the
museum to represent a particular time
period in the community's history. For
the second alternative, the museum
would have to exhibit a variety of items
from the beginning of the community's
history.
At present, the museum has a variety
of exhibits which lend a unique charm to
the building. Citizens feel that to become
a period place would restrict the museum
operators, and the building would lose its
character. Many citizens feel that it
would be static , for if you visited it one
year, it would be the same ten years later.
The best way to redesign the building
appears to be through the second
alternative. There are some fears that
this would create a "mish-mash", which
could be avoided if the redesign is
tastefully done. Since the building is in
need of major physical repairs, financial
support is needed.
Now gift shop
A new gift shop has opened in
Listowel on Highway 24 near the Main
Street intersection. It is appropriately
named the Roadhouse 23 Gift Shoppe.
The shop is an addition to the ice cream
parlor which has been operated by Jim
and Carmel Fox at the same location.
The store will handle gift items such as
kitchen crockery, handicrafts, glass
sagging artifacts and china figurines.
