PG. 6 VILLAGE SQUIRE/MAY 1981
col ccpt in London was Margaret Blackmore of Listowel, who's
since opened a show called New To You Fashions there.
She wanted to start her own business, and read an article
about a Vancotwer women whn started what has since grown to
become a chain of recycled clothing shops in the West. Since
there were already several retail dress shops in Listowel.
Blackmore decided to give the recycled idea a try. She started by
simply calling friends, asking them to call their friends to check
closets for clothes they were no longer wearing. Once the shop,
at 160 Wallace Avenue South, was open, Blackmore started
advertising locally and at one point was "swamped" with the
clothing she handles on a consignment basis.
New To You Fashions stocks ladies wear, children's clothing
from size 6x up and a line of new maternity clothes. Blackniore's
customers. like those at Audrey's Fashions. include sonic
teenagers. women working in offices and housewives - usually in
the middle-aged group and unucr. fhc store owner said she -
appreciates it if customers who bring clothing in on consignment
can supply the original retail price of the garment. The selling
price depends on condition, style and can be up to half the
original price.
Blackmore also stocks better labels and said prices for dresses
in the store range from $10 to $35, and for blouses, from $4.98
up.
Blackmore will also be stocking more furs in the future - she's
found they're "kinda fun" to sell and plans to be more
knowledgeable about the kinds and values of different furs b)
next winter.
Used clothing, whether period or nearly new, has become
respectable If the economy continues to sag. and fashions
remain fast -changing, more and more people will realize the best
bargains are in the recycled clothing market. Besides, no one
else really ever has to know you didn't buy that ultra -suede suit
or designer dress right off the rack in an exclusive shop. 0
