of southwestern Ontario - first in Hanover
where he was raised by his Fellman
grandparents and then in Waterloo
County. where he settled in 1960 s.
Schaefer, who studied with two
Group of Seven members, .I.E.H. Mac-
Donald and Arthur Lismer, was raised
with two hard and fast values- the
importance of working with his hands and
love of the land.
Paintings like Farmhouse By The
Railway and Sumner Harvest. Hanover.
reflect his grandfather's philosophy -
"We might lose everything but we'll
never lose the land." While Schaefer
struggled for many years, painting signs,
painting scenery for Toronto theatre
companies and working for architects. he
never wavered in his ambition to be an
artist. While others succumbed to the
lure of ad agency jobs• with reliable
salaries. Schaefer kept freelancing, to
allow himself time in his own studio.
In the 1930 s. caught in the Depres-
sion, he returned with his young family to
his grandfather's Hanover farm, and
there found his painter's vision. "It was a
fluke...only by force of circumstances 1
had to go home again. But I found
myself."
