MANDALA BOOK SHOP
Another store definitely worth a visit is the Mandala Book
Shop at 427 Dufferin Ave. two streets north of Dundas. The
Mandala occupies the main floor of an old house, and owners
David and Susan Estabrooks have maintained the original charm
of glowing hardwood floors and a lovely fireplace. The store has
been operating for seven years, and grew out of David
Estabrook's search for books about Gurdjieff, a spiritual teacher
whose works were not readily available in London. David had
experience working at the University book store on the York
campus and decided to open a shop that would sell titles not
stocked by other booksellers in the area.
Books in the Mandala cover an interesting range of topics to
suit a variety of tastes. There are excellent selections of
astrology, nutrition, heath and healing. and energy alternatives,
as well as many titles on eastern and western religions and

philosophies. As an increasing number of people begin to
re-evaluate ways of life from ecology to fitness, they often turn to
books such as those offered by David and Susan. Whether you
are interested in herb gardening or wood stoves, yoga or Jungian
psychology, the Mandala has much to offer, including fiction and
poetry on related subjects.
Much of the business is conducted by mail order, and a
catalogue of nearly 4,000 titles is available for convenient
shopping. Orders come from all over Canada and the United
States, and even as far away as the Seychelles Islands in the
Indian Ocean. Interest is also generated through book tables at
conventions and shows such as the Energy Lifestyle Show in
Toronto.
People in the area are fortunate to have such a wide range of
interests covered by specialty bookstores. Take time soon for a
pleasant day of browsing and rediscover the excitement offered
by the world of books.
City lights is now about eight tunes larger than the
original store and encompasses two floors. Owner is
Mark Emery. publisher ol the London Tribune.
