HERITAGE PROJECT IN BRUCE 1 his summer the Bruce County Historical Society and the Bruce County Museum joined with the Ontario Heritage Foundation (OHF) to launch the Bruce County Heritage project, "Exploring our Past --Aspects of Bruce County's Heritage." The project is intended to provide local groups with the opportunity of working together to preserve and promote local heritage. It also underlines the important role the past has in the daily life of a community and the importance of pro- tecting Ontario's heritage. Bruce County was selected this year because three Ontario Heritage Foundation provincial historical plaques are being erected in the county during the summer. These include two centennial commemorations (Chesley and Wiarton) and a plaque commemorating the prominent furniture manufacturer. Daniel Knechtel. The Bruce County Heritage project focuses on two themes which tie into the provincial historical plaques being erected. By the early 1900's Ontario's furniture industry was concentrated in Bruce and Waterloo counties. Cabinet shops existed in most communities. The second theme is the area has a strong German heritage. A travelling display on the furniture industry will visit Southampton, Kincardine, Wiarton, Walkerton and Han- over through July and August. During August the Bruce County Museum in Southampton will stage an exhibit of German decorative arts. A lecture series on folk art and furniture has been arranged for the month of September, to be held at the Bruce County Museum.
