SCHOOLHOUSE BECOMES GLASS
SHOP
The Old Schoolhouse, S.S. No. 15, Hay
Township, on Highway 83 between Grand
Bend and Exeter, has been transformed
into a glass shop.
Wolfgang Suppan, a native of Austria,
recently opened a shop in the school, and
he welcomes visitors who want to drop in
and see the Tiffany lamps, terrariums and
planters that he's crafted.
Mr. Suppan learned the craft of working
in stained glass in Austria. He fashions his
creations in two kinds of coloured glass -
cathedral glass, which is simply coloured
glass, and opal essence glass. a clouded
coloured glass.
Before coming to the Dashwood area
about a year ago, Mr. Suppan was working
in London, installing store front windows
and windows in high rise apartments.
Although the money was good, Mr.
Suppan looked forward to the day when he
could have his own shop.
He and his wife Barbara learned the old
school, which had been converted into an
antique shop. was for sale and they "fell in
love with it." The building is now both a
home and workshop for the couple.
In addition to the lamps and planters
that the craftsman builds, he's also busy
repairing stained glass windows from
churches in the area. If the window can be
taken out, Wolfgang Suppan brings it back
to the shop where he fixes the lead or
replaces the glass.
Another special item in the glass shop
is Mr. Suppan's "sun catchers" - small
window hangings made of coloured glass
and lead in a variety of designs. The sun
catchers include everything from flowers to
mice , frogs and other animals which can
be hung in a window.
