UP FRONT
First we had better introduce ourselves.
We are the people who, starting this issue, have the
responsibility for putting together Village Squire each month.
With the retirement of Keith and Jill Roulston from full time
publishing we've got a hard act to follow. But we're willing to
learn and have plunged into preparation for this issue you're
about to read with some trepidation and a great deal of
excitement.
Village Squire, under editor Keith Roulston, has been one of
our favourite magazines. It's the only one that focuses on
excellence, on people and places who are a little out of the
ordinary in increasingly lively and interesting Western Ontario.
New owners, McLean Bros. Publishing Ltd., a small family
company that has published Seaforth's weekly newspaper The
Huron Expositor for more than 110 years, intend to follow Keith
Roulston's policy.
Sitting on the editorial board and deciding on the magazine's
content and direction are former editor Keith Roulston, ( a
collective sigh of relief was heard when he agreed to help); Alice
Gibb of Seaforth, a UWO journalism grad and an excellent
reporter and feature writer; Sheila Gunby of Dungannon, a
former potter who brings her talent for design and the visual arts
to laying out the pages of Village Squire; and Susan White of
RR1 Dublin, editor of the Expositor.
We've heard from Keith Roulston that Village Squire has an
unusual number of loyal, involved readers. We'd like to start our
first issue by inviting you to send us short stories and travel
articles that we can consider for publication, the names of people
and places you think Village Squire might like to write about and
your comments in general...complimentary or critical...about the
magazine.
From time to time when we're planning stories for future
issues we're going to ask you for some specific help. Right now
for example we've got a story on used bookstores in Village
Squire's coverage area in the works and would like to hear about
any in your neighbourhood. Please drop us a line at Box 10,
Blyth, NOM 1HO.
Thanks to Keith Roulston, Village Squire is an original look at
the good life in Western Ontario. With the help of you, our
readers, we hope to keep it that way.
