OFA Directors Meeting
BY JOHN VAN BEERS
PRESS TO IMPOSE IMPORT CONTROLS ON CHICKEN
That O.F.A. and C.F.A. press the government to immediately
impose import controls on U.S.A. chicken. This resolution was
presented to the directors meeting and carried.
Peter Hannam, in his opening remarks, also stated that he met
with John Wise, Minister of Agriculture and discussed the
problem of U.S.A. chicken imports. He stressed the seriousness
of the problem. He said and suggested to Mr. Wise to work out a
permanent solution. Imports should not be based on the last two
years, rather on a percentage of the market, as this would not
interfere with marketing board planning.
NEW MACHINERY BOARD ELECTED
The new OFMA Board was elected. The new directors are
Brian Ireland, Peter Hannam, Richard Walker, and Calvin
Bennet.
RESEARCH ON SILO GAS DETECTORS
Jack Hale reported that research has been started on
developing a simple and easy to use silo gas detector s,in
response to a resolution passed at the last meeting.
CANFARM SERVICES
Mr. Lesley Barfoot addressed the meeting on CanFarm and
the programs available. He stated that 16 centres in Ontario will
be offering CanFarm services. He hopes to have them operating
by the end of the year. They will provide accounting, tax filing,
tax planning, and farm management services. Farmers can make
use of any or all of these services, depending on their particular
need.

RESOLUTIONS ON PROPERTY ASSESSMENT
Two resolutions on the proposed property assessment changes
were passed.
One from the property and assessment committee, recom-
mending that OFA oppose the market value assessment for
equalization purposes and if the assessment branch does use
them, that the resulting increases be compensated by an
increase in the tax reduction program.
RESOLUTION FROM HURON
The other resolution was presented by Jim McIntosh, ISM
from Huron.
This resolution called for OFA to become insistent on its
longstanding position, to have services to people paid through
taxes on people, and services to property paid through taxes on
property. Jim stated that education taxes should be paid through
income tax. That way they would be based on a farmer's income
from his property, not on badly inflated land prices.
Interested in a course
on writing or public speaking?
BY BRENDA McINTOSH
Effective Public Speaking and Effective Writing were the two
courses offered by the Huron County Federation of Agriculture
in 1978. The Speaking Course was given by Eric Clarke of
Conestoga College and there were 10 participants in the course. It
was held on 3 consecutive Saturdays at the OMAF office in
Clinton. Fifteen people were enrolled in the writing course and it
was held at East Wawanosh Central School at Belgrave. Karl
Schuessler was the instructor. This was the second year the Public
Speaking Course was offered, and the first year for the Writing
Course.
The Courses will be offered again this winter if enough people
show interest in having them. If you are interested, please
contact one of your County Directors.
Some of our members who have taken the Speakers Course
have spoken to urban groups to give them a better
understanding of Agriculture. A Speakers Roster is kept by Doug
Fortune and he endeavors to provide speakers on request.
