The
Young Farmer
A special lady
BY GISELE IRELAND
Around Teeswater when you think of horses you think of Kay
Smith and her 4-H Horse Club. Her members are real
enthusiasts of the club, their horses, and Kay Smith, not
necessarily in that order. Some of them are really green when
they start but advance rapidly under Kay's excellent tutelage, in
the art of caring for and riding a horse properly. Kay is specially
equipped in this field as her parents ran a riding school in
England where she grew up in the saddle and she also worked in
Colorado where she perfected the Western style. So, the
members get to choose Western or English.
One of the events they are justifiably proud of is their
participation in the 10 mile Ridathon for the Special Ability
Riding Institute of Arva. This Institute teaches riding to
handicapped persons and the Teeswater Club raised $580 for this
worthwhile endeavour.
The members are especially fond of "games riding" the way
Kay presents it and are learning to handle their horses and are
having fun at the same time. They haven't done much in the
show circuit as far as trophies are concerned but made a good
showing in the Trail Class at the Inter Club Horse Show in
Walkerton in August. The members are not professional riders
and enjoy the competitions but are more involved with the sheer
enjoyment of riding a horse than winning a trophy with it.
Kay herself is an excellent rider, along with a multitude of
other activities. She held the Champion Speed Typing Trophy
for Canada at one poitIt in her career. She has done outstanding
work with the Junior Farmers in directing several winning plays
in the Drama Festival. She herself played the Chatham Theatre.
Kay is also an Official Adjudicator which keeps her busy at
Drama Festivals. At present she is the organist and choir
director for both Junior and Senior Choirs at the Teeswater
United Church. She also directs various special events choirs,
one of which was the Good Intentions. She must also have a
suitcase packed at all times because she has managed to make
trips to Greece, Nepal, Algiers, Rome and Peru. When she's not
doing these things in her spare time, she helps her husband
Sydney run the Teeswater Pig Farm. They have a large farrow to
finish operation and specialize in Wessex and Lacombe breeding
Teeswater 4 - H Horse Club

Kay Smith's expertise
stock. Their son Julian farms with them.
The members agree that she is a special lady with the horses
and has a way of making learning fun at the Teeswater 4-H
Horse Club.
