RAGE
Derk Logtenberg, Ashfield twp. president
Derk Logtenberg is very confident
of the future of farming. "There's
lots of opportunity ahead," he says,
"the future is just as good as when I
started. But now they're working
with dollars while we worked with
nickels."
Derk has been president of the
Ashfield Township federation of
Agriculture for the last two years.
One of the issues concerning
Ashfield township is foreign ab-
sentee ownership which is in a
concentrated area in the township.
"It could be worse," Derk says.
"Hopefully it's only a temporary
issue."
Derk came to Canada twenty-nine
years ago from Holland and has been
on his present farm for 19 years. He
owns 247 acres, rents approximately
200 and also maintains a dairy herd
of 70 cows. He and his wife Tinie
(who is the township federation
secretary) have six children -
Frances, Gerry, Irene, Simon,
Kenny and Melissa.
Their local federation has been
sponsoring a Christmas dance for
many years now and has proven to
be very successful. Also, Derk says
they will be having their annual
meeting the end of July.
Forage fertilizer could be the best
investment in low cost feed you'll make.
And the payoff is quality protein —
as much as 1 ton from every acre!
