Ashfield Township Huron County
Perth 4-H club has co-ed
group studying outdoor living
You don't see too many boys actively
involved in 4-H activities but that may be
changing with the Outdoor Living project.
Both boys and girls can take part in any
4-H project but this project has interested
more boys than any other project according
to Nancy Ross, home economist for Perth
County.
She said they had had boys in bread -
making projects before but only about
three or four in the county. Now there's
about 35 or 40 boys taking the Outdoor
Living Project in Perth County.
The Staffa Co-eds is just one of the clubs
in Perth County involved in the Outdoor
Living, project. At the meetings so far they
have learned about physical fitness, what
equipment they need outdoors and what
to do to entertain themselves out of doors.
Another meeting that the Staffa club had
was all on first aid for outdoors. Another
meeting was getting to know nature, which
teaches them to use all their senses and
identify what they see.
Mrs. George Vivian of R.R. 2, Staffa,
one of the leaders of the group), said they
have started to press flowers with which
they can make a candle or put a pressed
flower arrangement in a picture wall
hanging. The other leader is Mrs. Spencer
Jeffery of R.R. 2, Staffa.
The Staffa project started in the middle
of April and hopes to be done by the end of
May. In that project there are 11 girls and
eight boys, "and they're very enthusiastic.
I feel they're gaining just as much as the
girls," Mrs. Vivian said.
She added that maybe the interest was
there because there was no longer any
scout organization around Staffa for the
boys to join.
