The Rural Voice, 1979-06, Page 48vegetable garden may have a method to their madness. Ducks,
especially Muscovys, enjoy potato beetles and will keep the
potato section free of both bugs and larvaex. They also eat
greens but by the time potato beetles are around most of the
greens are getting bitter.
Here's a tip that keeps surfacing in organic magazines or in
discussions on bug control. Many of us have had problems with
beetles eating tomatc plants just after they get established. The
solution is, to coin a phrase, to fight fire with fire or in this case
bugs with bugs.
Take a handful of the beetles or bugs and blend them, strain
and mix into a gallon of water. Spray your plants and within a
few days the problem will have disappeared. Soon new leaves
will replace the ones eargerly eaten by your pests.
Composting has become more popular and here are a few tips
to remember when building ,.ncir compost. Keep your waste
material moist and compact and h there is not enough rain
throw a pail of water on the pile to keep the composting process
going.
To avoid contaminating the soil with weed seeds, do not put
ripened weeds in the compost heap. Avoid adding garden or crop
refuse affected by diseases, such as clubroot on cabbage and
turnips, because you can spread the disease.
•
Be sure to tramp each new layer of refuse to compact it,
especially if it contains a lot of dry material, such as leaves. For
more information on manures and composts the local Agriculture
office has a handy booklet telling you how to make a compost,
and outlining the benefits of green manure and the pros and cons
of fresh and rotted manures.
Be careful not to spread disease through the compost pile

heat in minutes Leigh Power vents cost no
more to run than a light bulb and the family
sleeps cool every night If you already have
air conditioning. your air conditioner energy
costs are reduced by as much as 35°°!
Bonus:
An optional humidistat can
be added to alleviate the
winter season problem of
