Hitching devices such as chains and
clevises may have lower load ratings than
the nylon towing rope being used. Shackles
have actually been flung through cast iron
tractor differentials! A metal object could
also penetrate a tractor tire or decapitate
an operator if thrown by a nylon rope under
extreme tension.
A grim story concerning this hazard
involved a group of 2,200 U.S. students
who were using 2,000 feet of 5/8 inch nylon
rope in a mammoth tug-of-war. The rope
broke and whipped back, slicing fingers.
muscles, tendons and bones. Several
fingers were severed, and nearly 200
children suffered assorted finger and hand
injuries.
Nylon rope will continue to function as
a valuable towing aid. However, it must be
used with care and knowledge to avoid
serious mishaps. Stick to the following
checklist for safe use of nylon rope.
1. Make sure that nylon towing rope is
Targe enough for the weight to be pulled.
Suppliers should be able to provide load
tilting information for various rope
diameters .
2. Never drag a nylon rope on the ground.
Check for wear at frequent intervals, and
discard frayed rope.
3. Best advice is to avoid using short
lengths of chain, clevises or other attach-
ment devices in conjunction with nylon
rope, since metal objects can become
deadly missilies. If hitching devices are
used, their Toad rating should exceed that
of the nylon rope.
4. Bystanders should be well out of range
before any attempt is made to free the
stuck vehicle.
5. As in any towing situation, don't hitch
nylon rope too high on a tractor, or you
could be involved in a rearward turnover.
How to cut energy use
is drying conference topic
A special conference on Farm Grain

Increasing energy costs are the problem
and according to Stan Young, co-ordinator
of Agricultural extension, Ontario Agri-
cultural College the conference, "is de-
signed to update farmers on the latest
developments to reduce the cost and
energy requirements of grain drying."
The conference will focus on the
Innovator Incentive Program for Grain
