"Farm organizations must be on a
personal nature," he said.
"Agriculture," he added, "needs more
confidence from other sectors of society."
The position of women in the agricul-
ture industry and farm movement was
discussed as well as male/female roles in
farm organizations.
Let's get better before
bigger says OPPMB head
Howard Malcolm, Chairman of the
OPPMB told the delegates at the Annual
Meeting, that two packing plants are
expanding their hog slaughter facilities to
be prepared for an expanding hog output,
and that others have said that they are
switching. cattle slaughter facilities to hogs.
While some of the contract terms have
changed, the exports to the Japanese have
held steady over the last four years with
3200 hogs, per week being shipped.
A trial shipment of 3,000 hogs to Korea
is in the process now. This could lead to
more exports to that country.
In Stratford $200,000 will be spent on a
new assembly yard, to be located in the
vicinity of the old yard.
The North Area of the Pork Board, will .
have a leadership training
seminar for pork producers who may be
future councilmen or Board Directors. The
North area includes Perth, Huron, Bruce
and Grey counties.
With production forecasts, Mr. Malcolm
thinks that it is realistic to expect 3.4
million hogs in 1979. That is 400,000 more
than in 1978. The average price over the
year, he thinks will drop by $2 to $67.50.
"It is a good time to get rid of those big
old sows at 65$ a pound." he said. "Get
rid of those short term debts at high
interest rates. Let's get better before
bigger".
