The Rural Voice, 1979-02, Page 39Perth is Ontario's biggest pork producer
U.S. packers.
James Rollings, sales manager of the
OPPMB. told Perth Pork Producers that
they still produced the most pork of any
county in Ontario and have the highest
number of producers, respectively 349,558
and 1,895.
The board did business to the tune of one
million dollars per day. "Yes," he told the
farmers," you are part of a business that is
bigger than most Targe manufacturing
companies.
Over 3 million hogs were sold last year
the highest number ever. In 1971, when
production peaked, the prices were an
average $25.49 ctw. This year both volume
and prices increased, something that has
never happened before.
Mr. Rollings recalled the eight week
strike of two major buyers and praised the
remaining packing plants for taking up the
slack. Quebec also helped by buying from
6,000 to 10,000 hogs per week. The board
also sold more than 10,000 hogs live in the
U.S.
"For the first time in three years," he
said, "exports have exceeded imports.
The favourable difference was 3.6 million
pounds."
He said that this was not the complete
picture, for the number of live hogs was not
reflected in these figures. From all of
Canada 128,739 live hogs were shipped to
Mr. Rollings was cautious about the
price outlook. He said that the U.S. pig
crop report predicted farrowings to be up
by as much as ten percent. This could
mean a ten percent higher marketing in the
second quarter to 15% in the fourth
quarter.
Mr. Rollings said that with these
expectations ahead, it would be prudent for
the producers to tailor their shipments to
the critical time periods of holidays,
snowstorms, export cutbacks etc He
warned the producedrs not to fall back in
shipments and ship less in short weeks by
shipping gradually more in the preceding
weeks.
He asked the producers: "Please, do not
over -react to temporary situations. Orderly
marketing is our strength."
