other taste enhancing substances, is based on suspicion and fear
that they may cause cancer. Fear is a poor guide and as Dr.
Braceland said, suspicion is more apt to be wrong than right. It
even colors the findings of some top scientists.
William Butler, chief counsel for the Environmental Defense
Fund (which fund spends up to 95% of their funds on lawyers
instead of on research told Mr. Tucker in a telephone interview:
"You can't say something doesn't exist, becausethereis always
the chance that it does exist but nobody has seen it. There fore
you can't say that something doesn't cause cancer, because
there is always the chance that it does cause cancer, but hasn't
showed up yet. You can't prove a negative statement."
"Does that mean you can't prove that dragons don't exist?"
Tucker asked him. "That's right, you can't say that dragons
don't exist."
We'll give Mr. Butler the last word.
Guest column by Don Pullen
What some farmers plan for '79
Rural Voice plans to run an occasional guest column, written by
people with something to say that's of interest to farmers in
Bruce, Huron and Perth in future issues. If there's someone you
would like to hear from or something you would like to say,
submit your name and subject to Rural Voice.
The first guest column, from Huron County Ag. Rep. Don
_Pullen, just missed our January issue. It includes his predictions
for the farming year coming up and Rural Voice persuaded him it
would be equally valuable in February
An effort has been made to talk with a number of
people in the countryside to determine the kinds of attainable
New Year's resolutions that are being considered for 1979. Some
of these would appear to be almost basic to survival on the farm -
yet are overlooked or assumed to be in the "self-propelled"
category.
1. We all know that weather patterns will continue to
contribute to risk and uncertainty in agriculture. However, some
who experienced difficulties this year believe that by careful

arranging of their crops next year, having reasonable, diversified
acreages for equipment available, they will be able to cope with
most eventualities.
2. Others have decided to instruct the younger members of the
family to take accurate soil tests so that more precise fertilizer
applications and likely higher net returns will be possible for the
new crop year. The "gung-ho" general fertilizer recommend-
ations will only be used as a last resort.
3. A number of livestock farmers who are dissatisfied with
their current situation are planning to make use of the feed
analysis service in an effort to improve their returns. One
operator stated "perhaps more of us should consider using
available services to find answers to some problems rather than
complaining about marketing and mediocre production." Along
similar lines, one young farmer wrote these evaluation
comments at the conclusion of the recently held, week-long,
Provincial Livestock Management Tour: "The main benefit I
received from this Tour was the interaction and exchange of
